Cisco Academy IT Essentials is a new course specific for 10–12th grade students. Held every Tuesday and Thursday from 4 – 6 p.m., this 10-week course teaches students about the fundamentals of computer hardware and software concepts along with other topics such as security, networking and the basic responsibilities of an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) professional.

IT Essentials is a face-to-face course that will use Cisco Packet Tracer simulation-based learning activities to promote the exploration of network security concepts while allowing students to experiment with network behavior. The course will feature hands-on labs and interactive learning tools to help students develop critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills. Students will even learn how to assemble a computer, with one-on-one support from instructors who are IT professionals.

In addition to hands-on labs, students will get to take apart and reassemble a computer. Doing so will grant students full comprehension of inner workings of a computer, as well as the ability install an operating system and troubleshoot using tools and diagnostic software. Upon completion of the course, students will be prepared take the A+ IT certification exam, or go on to receive further training from Cisco, which could allow higher-paying jobs in an industry with a high demand for certified workers.

ITN–Intro to Networking

After completing IT essentials with the Primavera Learning Center, students can go on to take Intro to Networking. This class is for advanced students who will continue to complete hands-on activities while working with experienced, professional instructors. Completing this course puts you on the path to becoming a Cisco Certified Network Associate, an individual who has achieved a level of technical literacy and competency that is highly desirable in the IT field. After this course, students will only need to complete a few more courses through Cisco in order to be a CCNA. Hiring and promotion/advancement decisions made in an IT career can be greatly enhanced for individuals with certificates.
